Breaking Water

February 23-2008

12:00 a.m. My parents were sleeping in the living room of our 1 bedroom apartment. They had come to visit, and hoped for the arrival of our overdue baby. We all said goodnight and were off to bed.

12:30 a.m. I just dozed off, and woke up suddenly because I needed to go to the restroom... immediately. Even though I had probably gone 30 minutes before, this was in no way shocking as I had been needing to go every 30 minutes for at least 2 months.

12:31 Jumped out of bed, trying to find something appropriate to cover myself with (remember my dad is in our living room) but quickly, this feels like a SERIOUS emergency. Can't find anything fast enough, and, frazzled, desperate, "Mark, Mark, Oh my gosh I'm peeing my pants".

Never mind, it was soon very apparent to both Mark and myself that my water had broke. Woohoo, the baby is coming! We were so excited, and couldn't stop laughing. I was glad my water broke before labor. I never thought it would happen that way, I know it doesn't often, but it was a fun experience.

March 10, 2010 - present

I am seriously paranoid. I am walking at the park thinking, "What's my game plan if it breaks right here right now? Apologize to everyone around me. Walk home? No, go find a tree all alone, sit underneath, call Mark, tell him to come get me."

Walking into church, "What if it breaks during my lesson in young womens, or worse as we are walking into s. meeting with everyone already staring at the spectacle that is an 8.5 month pregnant woman?"

At the grocery store, "Oh no, there are so many people here, how could I possibly make it out of here without causing a HUGE scene? I heard to carry a gallon of water in your cart, and if your water breaks throw the whole gallon all over yourself, on the floor and get out asap. I better go put one in my cart."

Swimming at the pool, "What if it breaks while I'm doing laps? Certainly can't be as bad as any other place, maybe no one will even know. Will I even know?"

Paranoid, paranoid, paranoid. Has anyone's water actually broken in an embarrassing situation?

And... my friend Aida took some pictures of me and Russ Russ. These are a few. She took lots of my bare belly, but who knows who looks at this blog, right?

Guys I like the pictures, Becky, I tried to relate to your last post but was unable to imagine a situation where fluid would be running down my leg at an unexpected moment....maybe when I am 80 with incontinent problems will I understand your fear. Guys, we miss you. Russ Russ, what a studly man he is. Tell him, Browen will some day ask him what the secret to studlyness is. Take care and thanks for sharing womenly concerns on your blog. Mark... Go JAZZ!!!

I love the pictures! You look amazing.

As for the water breaking fear... the same thing happened to me! At home and all of a sudden - gush! I hadn't thought about next time and all the possible scenarios. But, now I will be!

Beautiful pictures!! I'm so excited for you guys! My water broke with Hailey in the middle of the night while I was sleeping (it woke me up). Your water may not brake until you are ready to go, you never know. I hope your delivery goes smoothly!! :)

I have to say I am REALLY jealous. My water breaking is one thing that I have never experienced. Three babies and it has never naturally happened. Baby one, I already had the epidural and was dilated to a 7 when the doctor broke it. Baby two turned out to be a C-Section after 18 hours of labor and the must have broke it when they cut into my stomach. Baby three I was dilated to a 9-1/2 before the doctor broke my water.

Good luck you two! I can't wait to see what little Luke looks like from the outside. By the way those 4D pictures are awesome.

Love the pictures! You look amazing!!! I still love your hair :)

My water broke with my 4th baby. With my first 3 it didn't break and each of the nurses you broke it told me it wouldn't have broke on it's own. They actually had to put a tad bit of muscle into it. But with Chase (my 4th) it broke IN CHURCH!!!!!!!!!! Yep! I wasn't embarassed about it, but I did panic just a little. I was going in full on "what the heck do I do?" mode. I had just got my 3 other kids in primary and nursery when it happened. Even though it wasn't an ideal place for it to happen it was kinda fun and it's a GREAT story. By the time I got out of there (after finding my husband and situating my kids) about 1/2 the ward knew and were coming out of classes to see what was up. haha. Fun times :) Good luck! I can't wait to hear if something crazy happens this time. I love the idea to take water with you in case it happens! That could apply anywhere, you could just start pouring your water out. lol. But yes, now that it's happened once, I'm sure I'll be a little nervous next time.

Oh, Russ looks so cute! Those pictures are great!

As for your water breaking... I had the same fears, although both labors it broke at home so I wasn't in public. I'm hoping it will break at home again. If my water breaks in public, they can all get over it and stare if they so choose...it's a blessing to give birth no matter how weird it is. Kuddos for writing about it on your blog...I think lots of women worry about it and don't write about those things.

P.S. Carry a pad with you in your purse so when it breaks you can dash to your car or nearby restroom and put one down there to catch the rest. Also, a towel would be good to have in your car. You probably already thought of that though, you sound like you've thought about delivery lots.
