Sometimes I go to extreme measures to make sure my kiddos sleep.
Like today when both kids were napping and I wanted to take a stress-free shower. You know, the kind of shower where I don't have to put Mickey Mouse Clubhouse on to make sure that Russ doesn't kill himself, pull lots of messy sticky food out of the fridge, poop in the wrong place, or injure Luke.
So, I showered in the pitch black. It really was the only way. Luke was sleeping in my room, and Russell was sleeping in his room, which is connected to our only other bathroom. Russell is very good at waking up as soon as the bathroom light goes on.
I think the dark shower actually turned out more relaxing.
Also, Mark and I have been sleeping in the living room for about one month. We sleep on a blow-up mattress.
When I tell people we have surrendered our room to Luke, some say I am too nice to my children. This is honestly quite confusing to me. I showered in the pitch black very selfishly. I did not want to hear Russell or worry about him while I showered.
I sleep in the family room quite selfishly as well. Within one week of moving to the family room Luke was only waking up once a night (I define "night" as the full twelve hours). Within two weeks of moving to the family room he started and continues to sleep for the full twelve hours without waking me up.
And just to clarify, although I do think sleep is important for babies, I also think sleep is important for mommys and daddys. I turn into an incompetent, emotional, sometimes hysterically laughing ogre when overtired.
Believe me, sleeping a full night on a very comfy air mattress is MUCH more restful than waking up every 2-3 hours in my very comfy bed.
I don't know why I am sharing this with you. Maybe I am just trying to defend my position as not being "too nice to my kids". Hmm, seems a little sad.
I really do love those little boys more than anything...except their daddy.

I will do anything for sleep. Most definitely.
i totally support you sleeping on the air mattress. i am sure you feel better now that you have my support. :) and yay for your baby sleeping a full 12 hours. awesomeness.
You know what seems a little backwards but totally worked? Putting the kids together in the same room. We now have three in one room together and if I try to put Megan to bed before the other 2 she just screams and screams.
I totally know what you are saying about being too nice to the kiddos. Just because it's nice for them doesn't mean it isn't best for you. And I believe we have slept on that air mattress...I loved it.
Oh and dinner is at 6:30 on Sunday...I'll make egg rolls and fried rice. We miss you guys!
I loved this post! You're not being "too nice to your kids", you're meeting your own needs and theirs at the same time. I think it's great!
I SAY "WHATEVER WORKS!"
GREAT JOB!!! I NEVER figured out how to get a baby to sleep that long that sooooooon!!!!
Can't wait to see you next week!
